Husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children.

• Jacob 3:7. Behold, their husbands love their wives, and their wives love their husbands; and their husbands and their wives love their children; ...

• D&C 42:22.  Thou shalt love thy wife with all thy heart, and shalt cleave unto her and none else.

​

“Children are an heritage of the Lord” (Psalm 127:3).

​

• Psalms 127:3.  Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.

​

Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, and to teach them to love and serve one another, observe the commandments of God, and be law-abiding citizens wherever they live.

​

• Deuteronomy 6:5-7.  And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.  And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:  And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

• Proverbs 22:6.  Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

• Matthew 10:37-39.  He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.  And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.  He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

• 2 Nephi 25:23,26.  For we labor diligently to write, to persuade our children, and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do.  And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.

• Jacob 2:10.  But, notwithstanding the greatness of the task, I must do according to the strict commands of God, and tell you concerning your wickedness and abominations, in the presence of the pure in heart, and the broken heart, and under the glance of the piercing eye of the Almighty God.

• D&C 20:47 (see also 20:51).  ...exhorting them to ...attend to all family duties.

• D&C 83:4. All children have claim upon their parents for their maintenance until they are of age.

​

• D&C 93:40.  But I have commanded you to bring up your children in light and truth.

 

• Moses 6:58.  Therefore I give unto you a commandment to teach these things freely unto your children. 

​

Husbands and wives—mothers and fathers—will be held accountable before God for the discharge of these obligations.

​

• D&C 68:25.  And again, inasmuch as parents have children in Zion, or in any of her stakes which are organized, that teach them not to understand the doctrine of repentance, faith in Christ the Son of the living God, and of baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of the hands, when eight years old, the sin be upon the heads of the parents.
